@ Lester, thanks for the comment. Not only that, but I think at the rate at which Brussouw is playing, Schalk has his work cut out if he want a place in the starting lineup once he returns.

Oi, i think this is now a wake up call for Schalk (not the first unfortunately - but a wake up call none the less) - it was a bad decision on his part, he did it, punishment fair.. Its embarressing for SA rugby for this to happen.. Hardlines, learn from it! Great Blog Guys, keep up the good work!!!

@Rugby Strategist, thanks for the comments. The cross field kick was fantastic. I think it will be a great tactic to use more often, given the quality and depth we have in our tactical kickers as well as the pace we have out on the wing. What is even more exciting is that it seems the guys aren't so scared to have a go and try a few things. Some will pay off, some won't, but it will definately be entertaining to watch.

Thanks for the support. Keep spreading the word.

Yo Dooley,
A quick reply as to your question: “Why would Schalk do that?”

He is a dirty player. Look at the past record of citing, penalties, cardings etc. He has more than Bakkies, and everyone says he’s a dirty player.

At the end of the day, I think Schalk was out of his depth. He has not played for a season. He was brought in to tackle and made a HUGE contribution of 3.

Brussouw made more of an impact in 20 minutes (3 steals, slowed down every Lions ball he could get to, made more tackles etc…).

What I really wanted to say is what every one else is thinking: “Pieter de Villierrs: You are the WEAKEST LINK. Goodbye!!!”

We are sitting on what is most likely the BEST SPRINGBOK RUGBY TEAM of all time. World Champs, 7’s Champs, Super 14 Champs, and we have the best chance of winning the Tri-Nations with this team than ever before.

We are sitting on a GOLD MINE of rugby talent at the moment and the best we can do is squeak a lucky 3 pointer.

I find it telling that a team can play so badly and still pull the rabbit out of the hat against the best players 4 countries have to offer.

Methinks that “something is rotten in the state of Denmark… Alas, you will nose him as you go up the stairs.”

At the end of the day, the head coach really doesn’t have to do too much at this level. He needs to work the strategy that has been developed by the management team and captain/senior players and let the coaches get on with getting the team fit and ready to play and practising their set moves. He is a coordinator. If we really need to have a “black” coach in the name of some misguided destructive philosophy then can we not get one that is a little less incompetent?

Then let’s look at some of his decisions… Ricky who? I mean, this bloke has been NOWHERE for two seasons but he still gets picked. What’s up with that? I can still live with it if he had a good Super 14 but he was about as useless as the government. His service is slow and his brain has become retarded. It is time for a new face on the bench.

The best outside centre in SA rugby starts off the bench? What’s up with that? AD Jacobs, as good as he is when he has a good day, is not suited to the midfield against these Lions centres. Fourie is WAY more suited. He is faster, bigger and can really take a half gap. Jacobs is a bit light, and once you have a hand on him he is as good as stopped.

I think there are a few key positions you don’t mess with… Front row, lock pair, scrum half, fly half. That is about it. The rest, you could probably get away with picking the form players.
Brussouw
Spies
Smith
Kankowsky
Olivier
Fourie
De Villiers
Terreblanch

I have the nagging sense we have not yet worked out how to capitalise on the strength of Frans Steyn at the back... Every time he or Spies grabbed the ball the two of them charged into the two biggest B&I Lions they could find...

Not sure that an Aussie or All Black would counter in quite the same way. Something we still need to work out.

I thought the Fourie Du Preez cross field kick was one tactic we should learn to utilise further.
