Friday’s games:
Chiefs VS Stormers: Round 10 began with what turned out to be one of the games of the tournament thus far. It was certainly the best game I have ever sen by the Stormers and featured what has to be the try of the 2010 Super 14.
The try was dotted down by Bryan Habana after starting in the Stormers 22m area and passing through 12 or 13 sets of hands en-route to the Chiefs try line.
The Stormers scored their 2nd of six tries just 4 minutes later when Duane Vermeulen crossed over after Gio Aplon fielded a misplaced kick and broke the Chiefs’ line, drew the last defender and passed to Vermeulen, who had too much momentum for the Chiefs’ #11, and crashed over for the try.
The Chiefs didn’t give up though, hitting back with their first of 2 tries, in the 40th minute, but the Stormers were too good on the night and outclassed their opponents in almost ever facet of the game. Winning 49 – 15, scoring 6 tries and clenching that crucial bonus point win.
My two cents worth:
-
Discipline was key in this match up, with the stormers conceding 7 penalties, half the amount that the Chiefs gave away.
- The Stormers spent a total of 3 min 58 sec in the Chiefs 22m area, compared to 1 min 33 sec for the Chiefs. Other than that, the Chiefs were slightly ahead statistically speaking, which highlights just how well the Stormers gelled on the night.
- Even in a losing side, Lelia Masaga is a special type of player, forcing 5 turnovers and gaining 102m with ball in hand on the night.
- The Stormers undoubtedly have the best loose trio in the competition this year, with standout performances by them, as well as Andries Bekker and Tiaan Liebenberg. All have done enough this year to have a strong claim for Springbok selection.
- I’m featuring extra long highlights for this game, so anyone who missed it can appreciate just how good it was.
Chiefs VS Stormers 2010 Highlights [tonytai2017]
Part 1:
Part 2:
Brumbies VS Hurricanes: The Hurricanes kept their Super 14 hopes alive when they handed the Brumbies their first defeat in 9 games.
The Brumbies were missing 6 of their first choice players through injury and never seemed as if they could gel as a team. After leading 5-3 at half time, the Brumbies faded away for the second half, whilst the Hurricanes scored two tries to claim a ten point.
Whilst having 6 injuries is never easy to overcome, the Brumbies are a better outfit than their recent displays would suggest. One can’t help but think that something in the current setup just isn’t working out for them.
My two cents worth:
-
The Hurricanes were on the wrong side of the stats in every facet of the game, but somehow the Brumbies couldn’t manage to make the best of their advantage in this regard.
-
Victor Vito was great with ball in hand, gaining a total of 103m on the night.
-
The Hurricanes missed 30 tackles on the night, compared to the Brumbies 25 missed tackles. Not a great stat from either team.
-
Whilst Adam Ashley-Cooper missed tackles on the night, he did manage to force 4 turnovers. Not bad for a back. Not bad at all.
-
Rodney So’oialo made 19 tackles on the night. Better than his form in any game this season.
