I’ve put a guy into a spear tackle without any intent whatsoever. Sometimes, it’s just the angles and momentum with which bodies collide that can cause it to happen. I think this was the case with de Villiers and I actualy think he tried to put Ranger down horizontally and not vertically. If you’ve played the game, I think you would give the benefit of doubt to de Villiers for sure.
As for Ranger’s tackle, in my view it was a moment of thuggery. You don’t body-check someone in that way by accident – you know what you are doing and you can pull out of it at the last moment if you so wish.

I’m filled with contempt at the idea that it is necessary for teams to be coached on how to handle the referee. Unfortunately, it seems to be a reality.
As regards SANZAR, I regard them as a joke and rapidly approaching the crassness of FIFA. There’s a saying that those who can, do; and those who can’t, teach; and those that can’t teach become officials and administrators – that’s SANZAR.
